Helper

Recommended for larger windows

Step 1: Measure Your Window Width

For Rod Pocket Curtains

Measure the width of your curtain rod from end to end. If you haven't installed your rod yet, here's how to determine the ideal placement:

  • Standard coverage: Extend the rod 4-6 inches beyond each side of the window frame
  • Full coverage: Extend the rod 8-12 inches beyond each side for maximum light blocking and visual impact
  • Narrow windows: Extending the rod makes windows appear larger and lets in more light when curtains are open

For Back Tab Curtains

Measure your curtain rod length from bracket to bracket. Back tab curtains hang closer to the wall and create clean, tailored lines.

Curtain Panel Width Rule

For proper fullness, your total curtain width should be 1.5 to 2 times your rod width. Our 54-inch panels work perfectly for most standard windows. For wider coverage, order two panels.

Step 2: Measure Your Curtain Length

This is where your style preference really matters. Measure from the top of your curtain rod (where the curtain will hang) down to your desired endpoint:

Popular Length Options

Sill Length (Traditional)

Measurement: Rod to windowsill, minus 1 inch
Best for: Kitchen windows, bathroom windows, cafe curtains
Typical range: 24-48 inches

Apron Length (Classic)

Measurement: Rod to 4-6 inches below windowsill
Best for: Traditional styling, formal dining rooms, children's rooms
Typical range: 63-72 inches

Floor Length (Most Popular) ⭐

Measurement: Rod to 1 inch above floor
Best for: Living rooms, bedrooms, formal spaces
Typical range: 84-96 inches
Pro tip: This length creates a clean, tailored look and is our most requested option

Floor Grazing (Designer Favorite)

Measurement: Rod to floor (just touching)
Best for: Contemporary spaces, master bedrooms, sophisticated dining rooms
Typical range: 96-108 inches

Puddle Length (Dramatic)

Measurement: Rod to floor plus 2-6 inches
Best for: Formal living rooms, romantic bedrooms, low-traffic areas
Typical range: 108-120 inches
Note: Requires more maintenance and not ideal for high-traffic areas

Step 3: Consider Your Ceiling Height

Standard 8-Foot Ceilings

Mount your rod 4-6 inches above the window frame.
Most popular lengths: 63", 84", or 96"

9-Foot Ceilings

Mount your rod 6-8 inches above the window frame.
Most popular lengths: 84", 96", or 108"

10+ Foot Ceilings

Mount your rod 8-12 inches above the window frame, or go dramatic and mount near the ceiling.
Popular lengths: 96", 108", 120", or custom lengths

Special Considerations for Linen Curtains

Shrinkage Allowance

Our linen is pre-washed, but expect 2-3% shrinkage after your first wash. We account for this in our cutting, but if you're between sizes, consider going slightly longer.

Natural Texture

Linen's relaxed nature means it drapes beautifully with slight irregularities. This is part of its charm and creates the casual elegance linen is known for.

Layering

Planning to layer sheer linen with blackout curtains? Mount the sheer panels closer to the window and blackout panels 2-3 inches in front.

Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Measuring the window instead of the rod: Always measure from where the curtain will hang
  • ❌ Forgetting about baseboards: Thick baseboards may require adding 1-2 inches to avoid curtains catching
  • ❌ Not accounting for pattern repeats: For patterned curtains, we may need extra length to match patterns
  • ❌ Measuring only once: Double-check all measurements, especially for custom orders
  • ❌ Ignoring furniture: Ensure curtains won't interfere with radiators, furniture, or window handles
